An open isn't always an open.

Apple can preload an email. Security software can inspect it. Mail providers can fetch remote images before a person ever sees the message.

Most trackers count everything.

Openn tells you what the signal actually means.

Typical tracker

Opened 7 times

No explanation.

Openn

  • 1 reliable open
  • 4 Apple preloads
  • 2 security scan

Same activity. A more honest answer.

Signal confidence

Five states. Each one says exactly what it knows.

Reliable

Opened by a person, through Gmail's image proxy: the count follows actual views.

Estimate

Opened, but the mail app kept the image after the first load. The count is a minimum.

Apple preloaded

Apple fetched the message automatically. A human read can't be confirmed.

Security scan

A security system appears to have opened or checked the email or link.

Not opened yet

No signal from a person yet. That is not the same as unread: images may be turned off.

Several recipients? The result is marked Global tracking: at least one of them opened it. Openn never claims which one.

Tracking should feel like part of email.

No CRM to maintain. No analytics cockpit to check. Send email exactly as you already do. Openn quietly adds the signal to Gmail when there's something useful to know.

01 — Compose

Track this email

Track opens and links in this message.

02 — Send

Send

Gmail's native Send stays exactly as it is. Email first. Tracking second.

03 — Return later

Opened — Reliable Apple preload — Read not confirmed

The signal sits next to the email in Sent mail.

04 — Link clicked

Proposal link clicked 14:42

Links inside the message body report their own clicks.

Send normally. Check normally. Openn stays out of the way until there's something useful to show.

We don't need your inbox.
So we don't ask for it.

Email tracking doesn't require us to read your email.

Openn is designed to collect the minimum amount of information required to provide email tracking.

No mailbox access

Google Sign-In identifies your account. Openn does not need permission to read your Gmail mailbox.

No email content stored

We don't store your email subject or body.

No raw IP storage

IP addresses may be used momentarily to classify a tracking event, then discarded.

No raw User-Agent storage

Browser and mail-client information is used for classification, not profiling.

Hosted in Europe

Core account and classification infrastructure is hosted in the EU.

12-month event retention

Tracking hits are automatically removed after the defined retention period.

Gmail

Your message stays in Gmail

→ Tracking signal

Only the minimum tracking event is sent

Questions worth answering precisely.

Does Openn read my Gmail inbox?

No. Openn is designed to work without Gmail mailbox-reading permissions. Google Sign-In is used to identify and verify your account.

What does “Reliable” mean?

It means every open came from a person, through Gmail's image proxy, which fetches the image each time the email is displayed, so the count follows real views. When an open comes from an app that keeps the image after the first load, Openn shows an Estimate instead: at least that many opens. Email tracking can never provide perfect certainty, so Openn shows confidence instead of pretending otherwise.

Why can Apple opens be unreliable?

Apple Mail Privacy Protection can fetch remote images automatically. This can trigger traditional tracking pixels even when the recipient has not actively opened the email.

Can Openn tell exactly which recipient opened a group email?

Not in the first version. For emails with multiple recipients, Openn clearly labels the result as global tracking.

Does Openn store my email content?

No. Openn does not store your email subject or body.

Does Openn store recipient IP addresses?

Raw recipient IP addresses are not stored. They may be used briefly to help classify an event and are then discarded.

Where is Openn hosted?

Core backend infrastructure is hosted in Europe.

What happens if I disable or delete my Openn account?

If you turn tracking off or remove the extension, new emails are no longer tracked; emails you already sent keep their links working and their results stay in your account. Accounts with no activity for 24 months are deleted, with an email 30 days before. Deleting your account deletes your data and kills every tracked link immediately: a recipient who clicks an old link lands on a plain “link expired” page, never the destination, and opens stop being reported. Openn warns you explicitly before deletion, because this cannot be undone.

Can I use my own tracking domain?

Yes, on Pro. Links and the tracking image are then served from a subdomain of a domain you control, set up with one DNS record.

Does Openn work outside Gmail?

The first version is focused on Gmail in Chrome.

I installed Openn and nothing happened. What now?

That is expected: Openn lives inside Gmail, not in a window of its own. Open Gmail in Chrome, reload the tab, and sign in from the Openn banner at the top of your inbox. The two-minute setup guide walks through each step, with what to check if the banner does not show.

Read the setup guide →

Where do I see if my email was opened?

In your Sent folder. Each tracked email carries a small badge next to its subject, and opening the email shows a line above the message with its opens and clicks. Your own opens are never counted.
